農民が副業として秋から冬にこけしを作り、鎌先温泉に湯治に訪れた客に土産物として売り始めたと言われています。
弥治郎こけしの特徴は頭部の二重、三重のろくろ模様です。頭部に描かれたろくろ模様はまるでこけしがベレー帽をかぶっているかのような愛らしさです。

What is Yajiro Kokeshi?
Yajiro Kokeshi dolls originated in the Yajiro district of Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture, near Kamasaki Onsen.
It is said that farmers began making kokeshi dolls as a side job from autumn to winter and selling them as souvenirs to customers who visited Kamasaki Onsen for hot spring treatments.
Yajiro Kokeshi dolls are characterized by the double and triple potter's wheel patterns on their heads. The potter's wheel pattern drawn on its head is so cute that it looks like a kokeshi doll wearing a beret.
